![]() ![]() These ragdoll physics also apply to main races, which makes crashing amusing. This is definitely a guilty pleasure, and is what most players will still be going back to even after they’ve finished the main game. #FLATOUT PS2 DRIVER#But the most addicting additions are the minigames where you toss your driver out the windshield in order to hit a target or get a certain amount of distance. One of these is a demolition derby mode that you would expect to find in this game, and that is pretty fun. Thankfully the load times are short enough that this will not bother most players.Īside from the actual racing, there are several bonus games that make use of the driver physics. That’s right, FlatOut isn’t an easy game, and you may have to spend a few tries on each track before advancing. However, couple this somewhat loose handling with computer AI that has a knack for catching up to your car, and you have a semi frustrating and pretty challenging experience. You will be able to get used to it, but there is a bit of a learning curve when initially starting the game (at first you may take turns too sharp and be unable to stop from running into a barrier). The meat of the game is spent racing around various tracks, and although your car is very manageable, it still feels a little floaty when compared to some other racing games. These upgrades range from suspension to body upgrades, and not all of them seem to make a difference on handling (although to be fair some upgrades do seem to improve performance). However, the soundtrack is very mediocre. Also, motion blur is used when you make your car boost, but it feels like they might have gone just a bit over the top with the amount of blur used.Įvery car sounds as you would expect it to in the game, and as an added bonus, as you race there is no annoying announcer (unlike in some other racing games). When the game says you are going 70-80 MPH you really feel like you are going quite a bit slower than that, which is disappointing. First, the game’s sense of speed isn’t all that great. ![]() It is even possible to knock some structures over and create more hazards to dodge. This destructibility also carries over into the race tracks themselves as all the tracks contain objects that can be ran into and knocked over. Cars are not only fairly detailed but also completely destructible it is possible to slowly take pieces off your car until you’re essentially driving a dented shell. The cars and environments look great in FlatOut. ![]() The game uses this a lot (for better or worse), and while the game may not be the best racer around, it definitely is worth a look. While at its core the game is a mix of straight racing and some demolition derby events, it is possible to launch your driver straight out of the front window when you crash into something. ![]() FlatOut is the newest racing game to hit the shelves this summer, and it definitely has a unique hook. ![]()
